Reading Between the Lines: A Non-Verbal Checklist for Interviews

When you’re interviewing someone, it’s natural to focus on the words they say. But often, the most revealing information comes from what they don’t say. Body language, tone, and small shifts in expression can quietly signal confidence, stress, honesty, or hesitation. Think of these as non-verbal “tells” – little clues that add depth to your understanding of a candidate.
Here are a few to keep in mind next time you’re in the interview chair.
The Eyes
Leonardo da Vinci once called the eyes “the window of the soul” – and for good reason. Dilated pupils can suggest interest or attraction in the conversation, while constricted pupils may indicate discomfort, irritation, or even hostility. Looking to the right (from your perspective) often suggests recalling real events, whereas looking to the left may hint at constructing or imagining details.
The Hands
Hands can be just as telling as words. Open palms usually signal honesty and openness. Closed hands, fists, or tightly clasped fingers often point to nerves or defensiveness. Steepled fingers are a classic sign of confidence. Rubbing hands together or fidgeting may suggest stress or uncertainty, while tapping fingers is a giveaway for impatience or frustration. Crossed arms can signal self-protection or a closed-off attitude.
Context Matters
No single gesture gives you the whole picture. A candidate crossing their arms might just be cold, not defensive. That’s why it’s important to look for clusters of behaviours and check whether their body language matches their words. Consistency is key – when verbal and non-verbal signals align, you get a truer sense of who’s sitting across from you.
Why This Matters
Interviews are about more than ticking boxes. They’re your chance to get a glimpse of the person behind the CV – their confidence, honesty, and how they handle pressure. By adding non-verbal cues to your interview toolkit, you’ll sharpen your instincts and make more informed hiring decisions.
