Finding the best candidate with spatial reasoning tests

26th April 2017

Spatial reasoning tests are the ideal way for recruiters to find individuals with the strongest problem solving abilities.

Sometimes the candidates with the strongest problem solving skills aren’t those with the most impressive CVs, and one of the best ways to find the hidden gems is to use psychometric assessments. These are tests which allow recruiters to look beyond the CVs of the candidates before them, and identify individuals who would be the best fit for a role.

What is spatial reasoning?

Spatial reasoning is one of those non-verbal skills which it is impossible to accurately gauge, simply by looking at someone’s resumé. The ability to see and think in 3D, to imagine the consequences of taking a different visual perspective and mentally play with shapes is quite a skill, and one which is particularly valuable in the so-called STEM sectors (science, technology, engineering and maths).

Why spatial reasoning matters

Research has shown that individuals with strong spatial reasoning skills are more successful in chemistry, calculus and engineering roles, and those who are better able to visualise shapes and spaces often make the best architects, chemists and designers. Being able to visualise things three-dimensionally means these individuals have greater abilities when it comes to solving often complex design and structural problems, offering creative solutions which others often cannot see.

Many candidates who struggle with language skills are more gifted in this field, so although they may not come across so well on paper or during the interview stages, they may well be the ideal fit for the role. Those with dyslexia, learning difficulties or those who do not have English as a first language may well perform exceptionally well in spatial reasoning tests, but are often in danger of being overlooked by many recruiters.
